Varun Narang, the chief product officer of Disney-owned video streaming service Disney+ Hotstar, has quit after a stint of nearly five and a half years with the company. He is joining Fox Corporation in the same role, reporting to Chief Technology Officer and President of Digital Paul Cheesbrough.

In this role, Narang will oversee all Fox-branded streaming products, platforms and engineering talent. He will also be responsible to accelerate the growth of Fox’s current and future digital streaming offerings.

“Varun is a unique visionary whose passion, expertise and creativity make him the ideal leader of our streaming products and experiences. His leadership will accelerate the momentum of our digital businesses and deepen the outstanding digital talent that we have developed across our brands” said Cheesbrough.

Narang had joined Hotstar in July 2015, where he helped lead and grow the video streaming service which had about 26 million paid subscribers as of December 2, 2020. Before that, he spent five years at Hulu, leading its product management and design teams. Narang has also had stints at Amazon, Xerox and Whipclip.

Fox Corporation was formed as a standalone publicly traded firm in early 2019, with the company’s broadcast, news and sports businesses that were not part of Disney’s $71.3 billion purchase of 21st Century Fox. This includes Fox Broadcasting company, Fox News, Fox Sports and a portfolio of local television stations.

In April last year, the company acquired ad-supported streaming service Tubi for $440 million. It also offers a subscription-based entertainment streaming service Fox Nation and an ad-supported service Fox Soul aimed at African-American viewers.

Earlier this month, former Star and Disney India Chairman Uday Shankar announced a joint venture with James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems. The new venture is expected to explore technology and media opportunities in emerging markets.
